Karva Chauth falls on Thursday 29 October 2026, four days after Sharad Purnima and ten days before Diwali. It began as a Punjabi and North Indian fast, but in Ahmedabad it has grown well beyond that; every year more Gujarati couples keep it, and every year we get more requests for a thali with two names and a year on it. This is what goes on that thali, what we make for it, and the gifts that go alongside.

What goes on the Karva Chauth thali

The thali is carried outside at moonrise, held up with a chhalni over it, and passed around during the evening katha. Because it is held, not placed, the weight matters more than for any other puja thali. The usual contents:

  • A lit diya, which is why a built-in diya ring is useful; a loose diya slides when the thali is raised.
  • The karva, a small lota of water, and the chhalni (sieve) through which the moon and then the husband are viewed.
  • Roli or kumkum, chawal and sindoor.
  • Mithai or a mathri, and a glass of water for breaking the fast.
  • Flowers, and often the sargi thali items from the morning.

A 12 inch brass thali loaded with all of that is heavy to hold at arm's length. A resin thali of the same size is lighter, and the glossy surface wipes clean of water and kumkum afterwards without polishing.

The thali we make for it

Any of our scalloped thalis with brass diyas can be made for Karva Chauth, and the personalisation is the point. The most requested combination is red or maroon resin, both names in gold script, the wedding year beneath, and the diyas set in pearl rings so they stay put when the thali is raised.

  • Three-diya thali, 10 inch ₹1,199, 12 inch ₹1,499, 14 inch ₹1,700. The sample is purple; ask for red, maroon or any shade with a reference photo.
  • Five-diya thali at the same prices, if your family lights more than one lamp for the moon.
  • Two-diya thali from ₹599 in 6 inch and ₹899 in 8 inch, for a lighter thali that still carries the essentials. The Shubh Labh inscription can be swapped for names.

Names and a year are included in the price. If you would like the mantra changed or a small pressed flower from your wedding set under the surface, say so at checkout and we confirm before pouring. The 10 inch size is the one most women find comfortable to hold for the length of the ritual.

Gifts for her

The gift after moonrise is part of the day. These are the ones husbands order from us most, with prices:

  • 12 inch couple photo frame in soft lilac with a pearl border and a golden stand, ₹1,500. Send the photo; we print and seal it under the resin.
  • Double-heart keepsake, ₹2,500, with your wedding or proposal flowers preserved inside, both names and the date in gold, and a photo in the smaller heart. This is the one that gets the reaction.
  • Rose-quartz serving tray with gold branch handles, ₹2,000, for the woman who hosts the katha at her home every year.
  • Jewelled latkan phone case, ₹999, if she would rather have something she uses every day.

Sargi and gifts from the mother-in-law

The sargi thali given before dawn is traditionally from the mother-in-law, and a lot of our Karva Chauth orders are actually placed by her. Pieces that suit that gift:

Keeping it together in a group

Societies, kitty groups and offices in Ahmedabad increasingly do Karva Chauth together, with one katha and a shared moonrise. Order-by dates for 29 October

A personalised thali takes 10 to 14 days in the studio, then courier time.

  • Rest of India: order by 10 October.
  • Gujarat outside Ahmedabad: order by 14 October.
  • Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar: order by 17 October.
  • Frames and keepsakes: same dates, but the double-heart keepsake needs your flowers to reach us first, so send them a week earlier.

After the ritual, wipe the thali with a damp cloth the same night. Water and kumkum do it no harm, but dried kumkum takes longer to shift the next day. Then it goes back on the mandir shelf until Dhanteras, which is only eight days later.
